Bartenders win penalty rates and secure work

UNITE members at the Carlton Club in Melbourne’s CBD have won secure jobs for every single worker in the establishment. After months of anti-union bullying the persistence of the bartenders has paid off. Every single worker at the Carlton Club – including the bussies – has been moved from casual to part-time and will now receive [...] [more]

Striking Baiada workers set the example for international students

UNITE members, organisers and activists have been down at the Baiada Poultry picket line, supporting striking factory workers in their fight for safe working conditions, a 5% pay rise and an end to casualisation and off the books work. Baiada is a disgrace. At this Laverton North factory there are daily injuries, workers can get paid [...] [more]

The Carlton Club backpays worker $3,800 – bartenders continue the fight for penalty rates

UNITE members at the Carlton Hotel have been fighting for the minimum wage and penalty rates, in the face of anti-union bullying and blatant lies from management and the boss. Workers at the Carlton – a hugely popular CBD bar – have been getting paid well below the minimum wage for years. A group of bartenders [...] [more]

UNITE Letter of Support to Occupy Melbourne

Dear friends, UNITE would like to extend its warm support to Occupy Melbourne. Our members are low-paid workers in retail and hospitality, who feel the destructive force of capitalism on a daily basis. Retail bosses, despite high profits, recently began campaigning for the legal minimum wage to be even further reduced to keep profits soaring. The occupations all around [...] [more]

Knight report changes welcome but insufficient

The government has softened some of the harshest aspects of legislation relating to international students at work. The recent Knight report, which criticised the mandatory cancellation of visas for students who work more than 20 hours in a week, clearly put some pressure on the government to clean up its treatment of foreign students. The [...] [more]

Retail bosses step up attacks on workers

Retail bosses, crying poor over online competition, are now openly saying that driving down wages is their key to increasing profits. The National Retail Association is proposing reducing the retail minimum wage by 10%, scrapping penalty rates for nights and Saturdays, reducing penalty rates on Sundays and cutting the minimum shift to one hour. The Productivity Commission [...] [more]

UNITE gets results on Brunswick Street

UNITE’s Brunswick Street campaign has won some real victories. UNITE organisers and volunteers visited stores along Brunswick Street on Saturday to let members and other workers know about the successes so far, and what they can do to win Award wages, penalty rates and safe conditions. Workers on the street were impressed with the union work [...] [more]

Fair Work cuts minimum shift for young workers

Employers have succeeded in their cynical attempt to reduce the minimum shift for young retail workers. Fair Work Australia this week ruled that the minimum three-hour shift be reduced to 1.5 hours. Business leaders have touted this as a victory for both employers and workers. This could not be further from the truth. A casual worker [...] [more]

Risk-taking Fairfax needs a plan that works

If you want to know the nightmare scenario for Fairfax’s major metropolitan newspaper assets, look no further than the United States. I’ve watched with great sadness over the past few years as newspaper companies, run by well-meaning but misguided executives (I’m giving them the benefit of considerable doubt here) have driven hundreds of revered and [...] [more]

Public supports Wikileaks stand

Every now and then a poll turns up which reminds us that when we argue for open government, we’ve got the people on our side. Today’s figures from Essential Report show that Australians not only think the Wikileaks cable release is a good thing, they think it overwhelmingly. Asked: Do you approve or disapprove of [...] [more]

Ville sende Krekar til Australia

New Wikileaks cables published in the Norwegian daily VG show that the Norwegian government would be prepared to send Mullah Krekar to Australia for questioning over the murder of ABC cameraman Paul Moran in northern Iraq. Wikileaks hysteria — get a grip!

The political backlash against Wikileaks seems to be more about the leaking than it is about any genuine concern about national security. Loose talk from people who should know better (that is, people who have trained as lawyers) about illegal action should be seen for the self-interest it is. Let’s get a grip. A pile [...] [more]

Don't Go Back To WorkChoices

Tony Abbott was a key Minister in the former Liberal Government that introduced WorkChoices. Now, he wants to bring back WorkChoices. He just won’t call it that. At a recent meeting with business executives, Mr Abbott said he will remove protection from unfair dismissal for workers in small businesses and bring back individual contracts. He has also said he will cut the minimum pay for young workers and change penalty rates — just like WorkChoices. [more]

Equal Pay Campaign

Today, women, who do the same job as men, must be paid the same. But still women’s roles are under-valued or they miss out on the best jobs. Unions aim for everyone to be treated equally at work and closing the gender pay gap and providing more opportunities for working women are major priorities. [more]

New protections and minimum standards will be better for all Australian workers

New minimum employment standards that came into effect on New Year’s Day will be good for all Australian workers and represent a major step forward from WorkChoices, say unions. Welcoming the changes, the ACTU says the 10 National Employment Standards deliver on a core part of the "Your Rights at Work" union and community campaign against WorkChoices. Don't Risk 2nd Rate Safety

Big business is backing changes to national workplace health and safety laws that would put workers at risk of injury or illness because it wants to cut costs and red tape. Australian unions have launched a major new campaign called 'Don't Risk Second Rate Safety' to prevent any reduction in rights and protections for workers. [more]

Union Solidarity folds but idea needs to live on

Union Solidarity as an organisation formally folded at the end of February 2009. The decision was prompted by a lack of resources and a need to rethink the group’s core strategy. However Union Solidarity activists believe that given Union Solidarity’s success the basic concept of Union Solidarity needs to be spread throughout the whole of the union movement.
